Why exhausts you say? Sound Pahije!!!

Akrapovic Carbon Fibre Slip On Exhaust For BMW F900XR 711x400 1

It’s very rare or next to impossible to find someone who doesn’t love the sound of a good engine. My own son who is not even 2 goes “dada broom broom broom”. This is what we all grow up to love. A good sounding engine is what some Dreams are made of. The exhaust has a very distinct impact on our life and what we ride. Royal Enfields have the Thump. Harleys GO “Potato Potato”!Suzuki’s have the smooth vooom, Triumph triples have the whistle.

People are so crazy about exhausts that there are even copies to give the public a cheaper option. Akrapovic does have a Kakrapovic. Sad but True. So it is but natural that when we buy a bike we want a good sound. While working for some brand, I used to get a lot of questions about whether his/her bike will have a good smooth sound after changing the exhaust. Unfortunately it isn’t the case.

Always Remember. An exhaust does not change the entire characteristics of the sound of the bike. A single cylinder will always sound like a single. Similarly a twin will be a twin.( Benelli 302 is an exception)

And the triples(Tiger 900 is an exception) will always be triples

and inline 4 will always sound like they should.

An exhaust only helps amply the original characteristics. Yes, just like music each brand that makes exhaust may focus on certain elements like Bass or Treble or just volume. Just like a Good DJ at TomorrowLand.

At the same time Exhaust also has other advantages like they are mostly lighter than the stock exhaust. Soooooo making the bike lighter overall. Also if an exhaust brand has a tie up with a particular bike manufacturer like Arrow has with Triumph or Termignoni has with Ducati. There is also remapping done which helps boost a few PS.

Exhausts also may affect the aesthetics of the bike. May look good , but may not appeal. Now if you want to get into detail then, there are 3 parts to an exhaust system. From Headers (Bend Pipes).

to the End can, that is the Exhaust.

Replacing or eliminating each would help make the sound louder and change a few things. End cans also have a Small pipe inside a pipe called DB (Decibel) Killer. Yes, used to mute the sound.
